JIS G3132 Hot Rolled SPHT-4 Steel

What is SPHT-4 Steels? SPHT-4 steel is a Hot Rolled steel in the form of plates, sheets & strips for pipes & tubes making. SPHT-4 is a material grade and designation defined in JIS G 3132 standard. JIS G 3132 is a Japanese material standard for Hot Rolled steel plates, sheets, strips for pipes & tubes making. This quality of hot Rolled steel is a type of steel that is utilized in making pipes & tubes material. A comparison with SPHT-3 steel will show how SPHT-4 steel differs with lowered tensile strength steel of the same category.

Dimensional Characteristics of SPHT-4 Steels: The applicable thickness for this SPHT-4 material as defined in the JIS 3132 starts from 1.2 mm to 14 mm. However the width of SPHT-4 material ranges to 950 to 2000 mm.

The Chemical Composition of SPHT-4 Steels: JIS G 3132 defines the chemical composition of SPHT-4 steels as under:

Maximum percentage of Carbon (C) is 0.30 percent.

Maximum percentage of Manganese (Mn) is 1.00 percent.

Maximum percentage of Silicon (Si) is 0.35 percent.

Maximum percentage of Phosphorous (P) is 0.040 percent.

Maximum percentage of Sulphur (S) is 0.040 percent.

Remaining is iron (Fe) percentage and with few negligible impurities.

Mechanical Properties of SPHT-4 Steels: The tensile strength of the SPHT-4 Steels is expressed in Newton per millimeters and it must be at-least 490 N/mm2 (MPa). The elongation property of SPHT-4 steel varies with the ranges of thickness.  The minimum percentage ranges for elongation is 15.

Applications of SPHT-4: SPHT-4 steel is used for pipes & tubes making.

    Dear Adam,

Do you know what grade of steel plate material use for Tower crane?
Refering to DIN standard it says must be High Tensile (at least 600 N/mm).

    Thank you, Regards.
